The Whisper of AIDS

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/maryfisher1992rnc.html

Summary: This speech is about the epidemic of HIV and AIDS. It's made even more powerful by the fact that the woman giving the speech, Mary Fisher, is HIV positive herself. She mentions the importance of family and friends to the effective people and these are the people that need to give the infected people the strength and courage to live their lives the best way that they can.

Move 1: Suspend Judgement
In the speech she doesn't blame any particular people for her infection, but instead tries to inform people about what this virus is doing and how these infected people feel.

Move 2: Define Significant Parts
Fisher mentions that this is very big danger now and it's not something that we only have to worry about later in the future. She also says that "We have killed each other with our ignorance, our prejudice, and our silence." This means that because people don't know enough about the virus and aren't admitting that they have it, we are killing eachother.

Move 3: Make the Implicit Explicit
Mary says "I am one with the lonely gay man sheltering a flickering candle from the cold wind of his family’s rejection." This shows that she feels for the gay community that has been shunned by their family.

Move 4: Look for Patterns
There wasn't a lot of repeated sayings but one thing that she does mention several times is that the virus only asks 'Are you human?' Something else that's repeated is how people aren't taking this viral epidemic serious enough

Move 5: Keep Formulating Questions and Explainations
What can people do to stop the spreading of this virus?
How can we help the people who are infected?
