Cuban Missile Crisis Address

JFK Speech
Summary
: JFK's speech about the Cuban missile crisis was about the Soviet Unions aggressive actions during the cold war. The Soviets set up missile's in Cuba for "self defense". It was clear to JFK that this action was an offensive move and not a defensive move by the Soviets. If a nuclear war broke out, the U.S. would be nothing but ashes. JFK's speech is to address the U.S. citizens what is going on and the importance to end the cold war.

Move 1: Suspend Judgement.
JFK is not happy with the Soviets, however he never directly says anything like "Lets kill those scumbags." Instead he says that the Soviet political leaders are making bad decisions without informing their citizens. JFK is ready to prepare for the worst.

Move 2: Significant Parts
JFK talks about how the Soviets set up missiles in Cuba for self defense. He believes they set up these missiles for a different reason so he decides to prepare the U.S. for a war and get more weapons. JFK is much like the enemy by gathering massive amounts of deadly weapons.

Move 3: Make the implicit explicit
Explicit: JFK performed a speech to the U.S. about the Cuban missile crisis.
Implicit: If we give a speech about a problem we will inform others about whats going on and maybe even find an answer to the problem.

Move 4: Look for patterns
Patterns of repetition: In this speech JFK keeps talking about the importance of not having a nuclear war. If there is a nuclear war there would no longer be the U.S.
Patterns of rhetorical figures: JFK uses metaphor's such as "Our own strategic missiles have never been transferred to the territory of any other nation under a cloak of secrecy and deception" to explain how the Soviets have not only set up deadly weapons in Cuba, but did not even inform their citizens.

Move 5: Keep formulating questions and explanations
What can we do to prevent this from happening again?
what if North America, Canada, South America, and parts of Europe were a huge crater in the ground?
What kinds of animals would have been killed?
How many animals would have been killed?
What does this speech from JFK mean to you today?
