Gettysburg Address

Summary: This memorial speech was given to commemorate those who had fought and died in the war and those who were still fighting. He also talks about the things they have overcame and are still fighting for. And that they need to continue to keep moving forward in their quest for freedom.

Move 1: Suspend Judgment

In the speech Lincoln does not blame anyone for the war that is going on, but yet talks only about moving forward.

Move 2: Define Significant Parts and How They are Related

He talks about how they have to keep fighting for what those men gave their lives for. Meaning that they need to win the war so that the nation can be the nation that those people were fighting for.

Move 3: Make the Implicit Explicit

He keeps reiterating that those men gave their lives for the belief that their nation will continue.

Move 4: Look for Patterns

He keeps repeating that they have to keep fighting for what those men died for.

Move 5: Keep Formulating Questions and Explanations

Can they really make a memorial, that is fitting for how many lives were lost?

How did the Civil War get its name? Doesn't the name contradict itself?
