In-Class, Aug. 31: Portrait Analysis

Re-read p. 15 from your textbook. It talks about portrait analysis, and gives an example.

STEP 1:
Locate any portrait (can be a self-portrait) from any time period on the Internet. Save the picture on your desktop, open up a new blog thread, insert your picture, and hyperlink it to its source (to avoid plagiarism).STEP 2:
Open up a blank Word document, click on "insert table," and create a table with three columns and at least four rows. Highlight this table in Word, copy it, and insert it into your blog. Label the columns as on page 15. See example below.

Data

Method of Analysis

Interpretive Leaps

self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh with bandaged ear (1889)

locate anomalies

ear is bandaged; we know from common knowledge that he cut off his ear. This refers to his mental illness. On the picture, he makes a solemn, unhappy impression.

van Gogh wears winter clothes; there seems to be snow in the background

make implicit explicit

the cold conveys an image of loneliness. The man seems untouchable and unapproachable.

Step 3:
Contemplate the portrait that you have chosen, and fill your table!

Homework for Wednesday is to read chapter 2 from the textbook, so that you will be able to fill in the study guide on Wednesday in class.
