Galarina (1944) - Salvidor Dali

Gala "Galarina" Dalí

Data

Method

Interpretation

Portrait of Gala (Galarina) Dali, wife of artist Salvidor Dali. this painting is done in a realistic style which is a departure from Dali's usual bizarre surrealist style

locate anomalies

Dali has be quoted saying that Gala saved him from "madness and an early death." perhaps the realistic style of this painting reflects how Gala grounded Dali in reality

Gala Dali is shown with arms folded and with one breast exposed

make implicit explicit

Folded arms is generally considered a defensive posture and her facial expression here seems rather confrontational, the exposed breast could be to add a sense of vulnerability to the subject. it could also be reflective of Dali's affectionate or sensual feelings towards her

The figure of Gala is against a dark background with a implied light source overhead

organizing contrast

The dark background makes the figure stand out, there is not other details to draw the eye away. Clearly Gala is the only subject of this painting

Gala Dali is shown with arms folded and with one breast exposed

look for patterns

The seated pose as well as the facial expression (stern with a hint of a smile) is reminescent of another famous painting, Di Vinci's Mona Lisa. Perhaps Galarina was Dali's homage to the Mona Lisa.
